R&R Taylor Construction Recognized by MCA for Best Historic Restoration of Montana State University's Hamilton Hall

Bozeman, Montana

The Hamilton Hall project on the campus of Montana State University required extensive structural stabilization to complete this historic upgrade of architect Fred Willson’s design.  The existing wood structure was removed, and existing wood floor and framing was shored up.  While the third and fourth floors were occupied, four feet of excavation was done in order to install new concrete footings, and new steel for the first and second floors.  This project required extensive communication to insure the safety, comfort, and needs of employees and clients accessing the third and fourth floors.

Over the past one hundred years, Hamilton Hall’s uses have changed to meet the needs of the campus.  In 2009, A&E, Beaudette Consulting Engineers, and MKK Engineering were selected to design the restoration of the structure’s historical integrity.

The construction renovation and restoration includes the first phase of structural remediation, incorporating the total demolition of the first and second floors, new interior foundations and full structural modification of the first and second floors with the intention of reinstating the historical fabric of the common areas.  Renovation also includes complete restoration of the exterior masonry on the building as well as the north entry and the replacement of original single pane windows and doors with new energy efficient windows and doors that replicate the historic profile of the originals.  Upgrades also involve replacing the antiquated mechanical and electrical systems in order to comply with the State of Montana’s initiative for energy efficient buildings.  Site and landscape renovation also took place to mitigate further water infiltration issues at the foundation.
